Life of PI - A VFX Treat

Life of PI - A VFX Treat

January 19th, 2014

Life of Pi was one of those novels that was considered impossible for film making. Pi was thought to be one of those books that was simply too complex to re-create. But Ang Lee was one among those few daring directors who can dare to do attempt this.  Joining the film in 2009 after six years of production, Lee finally got Life of Pi into theaters and its a masterpiece.

Visually, you would not see any films like this. Ninety percent of it is simply awe-inspiring spectacle, pushing the boundaries of what I thought to be possible on-screen. From the level of everything to the detailed CGI environments and animals and even things as subtle as the way waves hit the camera, no stone was left unturned to create this attractiveness of a film.

Life of Pi is about Pi Patel, a 16-year-old Indian whose family boards a ship to avoid political clash in India. But a sudden storm in the sea leaves him alone on a lifeboat with a ferocius tiger, leading them on an exciting journey that will challenge their faith, courage and the very delicate relationship they make in the journey.

The tiger was CGI, and anybody would have sworn it was real. We can say it is another Avatar in 2012 giving an excellent 3D and Visual effects treat. For starters, this film does tour around Avatar in the visuals department.

Life of Pi will make you spend days trying to think through all of it. It tackles religion, belief, hope, animal instinct, friendship and even the idea of reality. Its powerful, poetic and emotions. Even the animals, who can only emote through their eyes, have these detailed feelings and personalities. Every moment of this film is powerful and, at times astonishingly heart  touching.

Lee has made powerful cinema before, but his previous work falls short in comparison to this master piece. And the emotional power makes the visuals all the better. Where Avatar effects were just soulless spectacle, Pi visuals are used to enhance this unbelievable story that makes you question what is possible. It is one of those cinematic moments that come around so rarely, we cannot afford to ignore it.

Do not wait for it to come out on DVD as Life of Pi deserves to be seen in a 3D theater.

Dont miss it.
